A newspaper strip had a few panels to land a joke; a comic book had whole pages to fill with heroes. The two grew up side by side in America, and they look it.

simple round cartoons, soft colour
A warm thick-and-thin brush line, round-headed cartoon characters, backgrounds left blank or lightly sketched, and soft flat colour like a Sunday page.
Gentle comedy, family life and kids-at-heart serials: a comic you could leave on the kitchen table.
Where it comes from: Newspaper strips, 1950s–1990s.
bold outlines, flat primary colours
Simple heavy outlines, flat unshaded primaries printed slightly off-register on yellowed pulp, and earnest square-shouldered poses.
Pulp heroics, wartime adventure and wholesome period serials.
Where it comes from: American superhero books, 1938–1950 — the Golden Age.

Sunday Funnies leaves most backgrounds empty, so a caption box has the whole sky to sit in. Golden Age Four-Colour fills more of the panel with colour, but it is calm, flat colour, and the box reads cleanly on it.
Either way, the studio letters each caption where the picture has room, and every panel of every issue keeps the look you start with.
